“While we are embattled” at Para Site, Hong Kong

The exhibition brings collectively works by Noor Abed, Morehshin Allahyari, Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Sara Haq, Junghun Kim, Carolyn Lazard, Sabelo Mlangeni, Jota Mombaça, Avery Z. Nelson, Temitayo Ogunbiyi, and a newly commissioned studying room introduced by Up to date And (C&).

Leveraging the questions posed and actions adopted by Black ladies artists and feminists, in addition to practices associated to Black radical idea, the curators confront and picture the chances to reconnect, re-narrate, and regenerate ourselves with the bodily and digital areas we occupy. The exhibition locations the work and theories of Black radical praxis within the context of Hong Kong, elaborating on their implications and parallels around the globe and inspecting issues of safety and retreat as generative modes of engagement, safety, and survival. Within the face of a world pandemic and uprisings around the globe associated to racial inequalities, political violence, and ecological disaster, the exhibition emerges as an ongoing inquiry by the curators into the various impediments we face at this time, not solely in connecting with each other, but in addition in suggesting a floor for future engagement and solidarity: what occurs on this in-between state, which we at the moment discover ourselves in, and what occurs at this level of assembly throughout overlapping and ongoing intervals of embattlement?

The exhibition is a component of a bigger, ongoing analysis undertaking and collaboration between Masilela and de Paula Souza, which revolves across the query posed by the American poet-activist Audre Lorde: “How will we be taught to like one another whereas we’re embattled on so many fronts?” The exhibition title takes the type of the conjunctive clause to this overarching query, current inside an intermediate state of being, which is mirrored within the exhibition design Human Architects. Shifting between generative and chaotic states, the exhibition presents a chance for alignment by way of the convening of ten worldwide artists and practitioners together with a studying room newly created for Para Website in collaboration with the C& Heart of Unfinished Enterprise and Asia Artwork Archive and different native collaborators. The exhibition engages the viewers within the politics of affection, reminding us of the chances to come back collectively to find and launch latent powers and tensions throughout determined circumstances.
