“Mire Lee: Black Sun” at New Museum, New York

Put in within the New Museum’s Fourth Flooring gallery, “Mire Lee: Black Solar” will debut a brand new site-specific set up that includes an architectural surroundings, kinetic sculpture and cloth works. Composed of supplies that embody low-tech motors, pumping programs, metal rods, and PVC hoses crammed with grease, glycerin, silicone, slip, and oil, Lee’s animatronic sculptures function each like dwelling organisms and organic machines. Drawing references from structure, horror, pornography, and cybernetics, and evoking bodily capabilities and environmental decay, Lee presents a visceral means to explain properties that exist between the realms of the technological and the corporeal. Titled after Julia Kristeva’s 1987 ebook Black Solar—a examine of melancholy and melancholia—Lee’s set up is led by considerations of house, environment, and supplies together with cloth, metal, and clay to counsel emotional voids and psychological tensions. Previously 12 months, Lee has had institutional solo exhibitions at MMK Frankfurt and Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Netherlands, and has participated in main worldwide exhibitions together with the 59th Worldwide Artwork Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, the 58th Carnegie Worldwide, and Busan Biennial 2022.
