Can the artwork of music bridge variations that separate us? For Reena Esmail, working as a composer is about greater than music: It’s about constructing what she calls “equitable musical areas” for the performers and the viewers. Born to Indian immigrants, she feels passionately that cultural distinction could be a supply of richness in each life and music. She remembers one memorable sitar live performance at The Met that notably impressed her to work between the worlds of Western and Indian classical music, a joyful mixture that refines and uplifts her sense of function.
