“Studio Sound” is an annual efficiency collection that champions artists and musicians whose work engages new potentialities for sound and music. The second presentation of “Studio Sound” encompasses a new opera titled If you happen to unfolded us by interdisciplinary artist and author Sable Elyse Smith, in collaboration with composer David Dominique and vocalist Freddie June. Serving as the primary half of a bigger ongoing undertaking, the efficiency intertwines an unfolding love story between two Black girls with the protagonist’s journey of self-discovery, staged throughout the intimate scale of the Kravis Studio. “Studio Sound: Sable Elyse Smith” is organized by Martha Joseph, The Phyllis Ann and Walter Borten Assistant Curator of Media and Efficiency, with Might Makki, Curatorial Assistant, Division of Media and Efficiency.

Taking the musical potential of textual content as her place to begin, Smith explores voice as creative materials on this immersive multimedia efficiency. The work, an opera for 2 voices and eight-piece chamber ensemble, is structured in two elements, every consisting of a collection of songs that weave collectively a story of need, rejection, self-discovery, and resilience.
